Antique Peranakan (Straits Chinese) Silver "Pending" (belt buckle). It is a classic piece of Nyonya jewelry, likely dating from the late 19th century to the early 20th century (circa 1890–1930).
The design is executed in the Repoussé and Chasing technique, where the silver is hammered from the back to create a high-relief 3D effect.
• Phoenix (Fenghuang): Visible on both sides of the center. In Peranakan culture, the phoenix represents the empress, beauty, and grace. It is the primary symbol for the bride or the "Nyonya" (woman) of the house.
• Peony (Mudan): The large flowers surrounding the birds symbolize prosperity, riches, and honor.
• Symbolism: Together, the "Phoenix and Peony" represent a wish for a happy marriage and a wealthy household.
• Provenance: Straits Settlements (Malacca, Penang, or Singapore
• Technique: Exquisite hand-hammered repoussé work with intricate openwork (pierced) details.
• Design: A central composition of two Phoenixes amidst blooming Peonies, set within a scalloped beaded border.
