20th-century Hand painted vase
This vase is a "blessing vessel," designed with layers of traditional Chinese auspicious meanings:
• The "Shou" (寿) Character: The prominent red character on the neck is an stylized form of "Shou," representing longevity. It is rendered in "Seal Script" (篆書), which adds an air of antiquity and scholarly prestige.
• The Flower Panels (Opening/Kaiguang): The circular or ruyi-shaped frames on the belly are called "Kaiguang" (开光). This technique draws the eye to specific scenes.
• Peonies/Flowers: These represent wealth and honor (Fugui). The variety of colors (yellow, pink, blue) suggests "a garden of a hundred flowers," symbolizing prosperity.
• The Dragon Handles: These are "Chi" dragons (螭龙), an archaic style of dragon often used on scholar's objects. They represent protection and high social status.
