Artist: Liu Chuncao (刘春草, 1925–2014)
Subject: Bird and Silk Cotton Tree (Kapok) Blossoms
Style: Lingnan School (Ink and Color on Paper/Silk)
The Artwork:
This exquisite "Bird and Flower" (Huaniao) painting captures the vibrant energy of spring. It features the bold, fiery red blossoms of the Silk Cotton Tree (Kapok), a signature subject in Cantonese and Lingnan art symbolizing strength and vitality. A delicate blue-winged songbird perched atop the weathered, textured branch provides a serene contrast to the intense red of the petals.
About the Artist:
Liu Chuncao was the sole direct disciple of Chen Shuren, one of the three founders of the world-renowned Lingnan School. Born in Guangzhou and later settling in Malaysia, Liu’s work is celebrated for its "spirit resonance" and its ability to bridge traditional Chinese techniques with a modern, western-influenced sense of light and color. His works have been exhibited globally and are held in prestigious collections, including the Great Hall of the People in Beijing.
