Peranakan (Straits Chinese) "Pending", which is a traditional ornamental belt buckle. These were prominent in the 19th and early 20th centuries across the Malay Archipelago (Malaysia, Singapore, and Indonesia) and were typically worn with a silk or silver-mesh belt as part of formal attire, such as the baju panjang or sarong kebaya.

1. Origin & Style

Type: Peranakan / Straits Chinese "Pending" (Belt Buckle).

Style: Traditional repoussé and chased metalwork. The ogival (eye-shaped) form is characteristic of the Malay-influenced designs adopted by the Straits Chinese community.

Motifs: The central panel features a floral star/rosette (often representing the lotus or peony), surrounded by intricate foliate scrolls and scrolling vines. The repetitive "border" pattern along the edges is classic repoussé work meant to catch the light.

"An exquisite example of early 20th-century Peranakan craftsmanship, this 'Pending' belt buckle features a traditional ogival form meticulously decorated with hand-chased floral and foliate motifs. Historically worn by the Baba-Nyonya community as a symbol of status and wealth, this piece showcases a central rosette set with a [mention stone color] cabochon. The heavy copper mounting on the reverse reflects the authentic construction of the period."
